Evil: Is Not a Thing?

Today’s post is going to be upsetting to many people. I won’t mince words, I’m not going to be polite today. Cursing and the like bother you? Go check Pinterest or something. I read something that was such an affront to my senses I have dwelt on it for days. I’m infuriated by it. It is a statement that is an indictment of every single thing that is wrong with our society.

The idea that it was written, is certain proof of our failings as a culture beginning to show, or perhaps simply becoming more visible. It disgusts me to think that people like its author, live near me. Not in the geographical sense, I have no ideal where he lives. I mean on this entire planet. In this universe. It is a hope of mine that he turns away from such an attitude, and swiftly. There is only one thing that is greater than a person who commits evil. The person who allows it to occur through passive permission, or damnable inaction.

As a victim of this type of evil, I’m violently opposed to its utterance. Which makes me damn glad this wasn’t said to my face. I have a tolerance-for-bullshit meter that is set permanently to -.05 and if it gets above 3 out of 10 I’m already making plans to harm something. This statement jumped it immediately to 8. I’m usually violent by 5 on that scale. Remember, I’m a work in progress.

I’m not giving you the source of the quote. So I will just paste it here.

“There is no such thing as something that is evil for evil’s sake. Evil is simply a misconstrued desire for the good. Evil is not a thing, but a privation of a good, a lack. Name me one evil that does not fit this description. Hitler’s killing of the Jews, while obviously evil, was done with the screwed up mentality that it would eventually help humanity. Now I’m not excusing evil, but I do think that we need to be careful with our view of it.”

I will name you one thing. Fucking children. Is there a misguided sense of good in that? I’m not talking about statutory rape. That is also damnable, but pedophilia is a whole other level of pure fucking evil. You are taking a being who isn’t even developed enough mentally to understand what is happening to them. The very word means you are attracted to children who have not matured to puberty. We ain’t talking about a 22 year old guy and a 15 year old girl. That could be a misconstrued sense of love, or good. Is pedophilia a ‘simply misguided attempt at good?”  I can personally testify, no, it fucking isn’t. It is predatory by its very nature. It is power over the powerless. You are taking someone who is unable to consent, or even understand what is happening to them, and making them an object of your sexual desire. You are taking their very humanity, and turning them into an object. Not a person, a thing.

When I read that I wanted to spill that fuckers guts on the ground and take a look at his liver. It’s probably so lily-white that Antifa would fucking punch it. There’s no such thing as something that is evil for evil’s sake? Fuck you. Yes, there absolutely is. Let me show you a few things that may change your mind before you fuck up and say something like that in front of the wrong person.

There was nothing misguided about the fucking holocaust first of all. Have you ever even casually browsed the subject? It is absolute proof that ordinary, every day people are capable of pure evil. We all have it in us to do terrible things to each other.

“The whole business was the most gruesome I had ever seen in my life, because I was frequently able to see that after a burst had been fired the Jews were only wounded and those still living were more or less buried alive…. I remember that from out of the piles of corpses the SS [ sic] men were cursed by the wounded” (Browning, 140-1). The men who caused such images, which are disturbing even when viewed as printed words on a page, could not have ignored them, yet the majority continued to take part.”

Still no? Try this.

The Milgram Experiment

Maybe those are a bit too broad for you to understand. The scope a bit much. Let’s get it down to a personal level then.

Kelly Anne Bates

Manchester, UK: 1996

Over a period of 4 weeks, 17yr old Kelly Anne Bates was tortured and eventually murdered by her 49yr old boyfriend James Patterson Smith.

Some of the 150+ injuries found on the dead girl’s body included multiple stabs wounds by knives, forks & scissors, including stab wounds found inside her mouth. She had been burned and scalded all over her legs, and her ears, nose, eyebrows, mouth, lips and genitalia had all been mutilated. And to complete the cringe worthiness if you hadn’t already reached that point, stab wounds were found in Kelly’s empty eye sockets. Both eyes had been gouged out well before her death.

Kelly had lost around 20 kg through starvation and had not received any water for several days leading up to her death.

Was that misguided good? Did he just gosh dang love her so much he took her fucking eyes out? How about the next one, have a read if you’ve got the nerve to do it. After all, it’s just misguided!

Christopher M. Bour, 40, pleaded guilty in January, without a plea agreement, to paying Natisha Hillard a total of $500 to have sex with a 4-month-old girl, an arrangement that lasted until the child was 18 months old.

U.S. District Court Judge Rudy Lozano on Thursday rejected Bour’s request for the mandatory minimum of 30 years in prison, saying that his crime was too “horrific.” He sentenced Bour to a life sentence plus 55 years to be served consecutively.

“In all honesty, much of the evidence in here is very disgusting,” Lozano said during the sentencing hearing at federal court in Hammond.

Bour pleaded guilty to buying a child for sex, possessing child pornography and three counts of producing child pornography.

Hillard, whom Bour met in 2011 through a dating service, also pleaded guilty in the case and is awaiting sentencing. She was prepared to testify Thursday at Bour’s sentencing but was not called, according to prosecutors.

Hillard has admitted to being in the room with Bour and the baby on all but the last meeting, when he paid her extra to be alone with the baby. Source

Crushing animals to death for sexual pleasure? Oh, a simple misunderstanding here!

United States
In 1999, the United States Congress enacted a statute affecting the legality of crush films which criminalized the creation, sale, and possession of depictions of animal cruelty, though with an exception for “any depiction that has serious religious, political, scientific, educational, journalistic, historical, or artistic value.”In 2008, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit invalidated the ban on the sale and possession of such films (if not otherwise obscene) as a violation of the Constitution’s guarantee for freedom of speech. The United States Supreme Court affirmed the Third Circuit’s decision in United States v. Stevens, finding the law unconstitutional because the law was so broad and vague that it included any portrayal of an animal in or being harmed such as by hunting or disease. On November 28, 2010, bill H.R. 5566, which prohibits interstate commerce in animal crush films, was passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate, and on December 9, the bill was signed by President Obama becoming the Animal Crush Video Prohibition Act of 2010

On September 8, 2015, a Houston woman pleaded guilty in nation’s first federal animal crush video case.

In 2016, a man on YouTube under the name “bootsmade4crushing” uploaded videos of himself crushing inanimate objects with his expensive boots. However, he handled a secret second channel under the name “Boots666” through his Tumblr blog that linked to unlisted videos where he crushed live animals. Both his channels and Tumblr blog have been removed since being exposed.

Prosecution is rare, often the models are difficult to visually identify just from images of their often clothed lower bodies. The first arrest was made in 2002, 2 years after the New York police raided the home of Thomas Capriola.

United Kingdom
Although the majority of films are thought to originate in the United States, the first arrest in the UK was made in 2002 of Craig Chapman, Christine Besford, Sarah Cooke, and Theraza Smallwood. The industry is estimated to generate thousands of pounds’ worth of sales.

China
Although not illegal under Chinese animal cruelty laws, in 2006, Wang-Jue (simplified Chinese: 王 珏; traditional Chinese: 王 玨; pinyin: Wáng-Jué), a Chinese nurse appearing in an Internet crush video stomping a helpless kitten with her stilettos, gave herself up to authorities after bloggers and some print media started a campaign to trace back the recording. In the beginning, she was labeled as the kitten killer of Hangzhou, because it was believed she was from there; but some internauts recognized an island in northern Heilongjiang province. Upon discovery of her identity, Wang Jue received death threats from many angry animal lovers. Source

How about the horrific murders that occur daily in Mexico from the drug cartels? Or the thousands of slaves that still exist in Africa to this very day? Is that shit misguided?

Do you really need more examples? Evil is absolutely real, and is surrounding you every single day. I showed you a teaspoon of it. There’s an entire ocean more of it out there. Evil, is not like darkness. The absence of light. It’s a tangible reality that goes to work every single solitary day. Let me show you where I grew up. You’ll get a nice introduction to evil there pretty quickly. Provided you survive long enough to learn anything.

This is the error of subjective morality on display. You don’t get to move the goalposts of what is good and what is evil based on societal concerns, or to be ‘cautious’ with the word evil. Beating a woman with a cane for sitting too close to a man is a damnable act whether you live in Dogwater, Mississippi or Tehran, Iran. Evil will always walk this earth. Especially with ‘men’ like you around.

Don’t bother with a ‘mental illness’ defense of this bullshit either. I have so many of those illnesses I am taking up 4 chapters of the DSM-V. I don’t even get the ‘fun’ part of it that Tumblr loves so much. Where they self-diagnose and play pretend with it. I have months where I can barely muster the will to get out of bed or eat. I have so many medicines I have to take that it has ruined my stomach permanently. I dwell on violence constantly. I can go from zero to murder in the time it would take you to draw a breath. I wake up to nightmares of my son dying every fucking day.

Yet I choose to be something else. I am not a product of my environment. I will not be a slave to my abusers. When I lack the will to combat it, I muster it the fuck up. Everyone, even people who are full blown pedophiles have choices to make. The examples I showed you aren’t even examples of psychosis! These are just evil fucking people. Doing evil fucking things.

I credit my faith in helping me cut the cords of my self oppression, but I have to make that choice every minute of every day. Day after day. Week after week. Year after year. It isn’t easy, but I refuse to be evil. I also refuse to allow it in my presence, and I will condemn anyone who puts such a damned lie on the internet like you have. If, by your ignorance, you’ve caused one person, just one; to act out something evil inside them you are as guilty of it as they are. Passive permission is permission. I’m ashamed that you are a part of my species. Limp-dicked, hand-waiving, enablers like you are just as bad as the predators they openly ignore, or qualify with some strange pseudo-understanding that evil isn’t real.

You need to rethink your internal philosophies and quickly.

“In keeping silent about evil, in burying it so deep within us that no sign of it appears on the surface, we are implanting it, and it will rise up a thousand fold in the future. When we neither punish nor reproach evildoers, we are not simply protecting their trivial old age, we are thereby ripping the foundations of justice from beneath new generations.”

  1. Alfred said it well in The Dark Knight:
“They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.”

The idea that evil does not exist is so ridiculous on its fact that I immediately find myself asking just what the person saying so is selling. Inevitably, it seems, they believe in evil alright. It’s just YOUR concept of evil that they have a problem with. But the examples you give cut to the heart of it–these are things that everyone ought to be able to agree are evil. People trying to argue around that don’t care even a little bit about either the villain or the perpetrator. They’ve just got their own tinpot philosophy they want to push.

  2. Word up, sir. Don’t need to ask pardon for getting fired up over this. You’re absolutely right – there is such a thing as true evil. This flies in the face of contemporary relativism.

I think the writer you quoted is bastardizing St. Augustine (http://www.tertullian.org/fathers/augustine_enchiridion_02_trans.htm#C4). I buy what he says – that evil is the loss, corruption, and lack of good. All of Creation possesses goodness. But free will often leads to the abuse of God’s gifts and the diminishing and destruction of good.

  3. Ahh, you know your Augustine. I know that’s what he is misusing, but only someone with theological knowledge would see that. So I didn’t want to source his argument and then make it theological disagreement. Here’s the part where I’m going to sound arrogant, and I ask for your grace to know I’m not being a jerk. I believe St. Augustine was incorrect to a degree on the matter. I pray, and look forward to not caring about it with him together in paradise for eternity.

Here is my justification for this train of thought.
Matthew 7:18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit. Therefore in my understanding a sense of ‘good’ is irrelevant to the act. “The road to hell” and all that.

You can’t bring good out of malice, it’s a contradiction that I’m sure you’ll have noticed is Summa Theologica in short about good causing evil. I’ve always leaned more on St. Thomas Aquinas’s understanding as I find it to be more in line with both scripture and tradition.

    • Nope, you don’t sound arrogant to me. Augustine was a brilliant Doctor of the Church, but that doesn’t mean he was right about everything.

I must confess I’m an expert on neither Augustine nor Aquinas, though I’m more familiar with the writings of the former. I could do with some further study (unfortunately my reading time has been more dedicated to scifi than apologetics these days). You’ve given me something to think on! Thank you.

  4. The person who is the source of that quote is not just a dangerous fool but someone who enables evil by making it seem normal. He’s a threat to everyone around him.

One of my uncles fought his way across Europe during WW2 and was one of the lead scouts who found Dachau. What he saw there marked him for the rest of his life; he couldn’t even talk about it to anyone but his wife for 40 years. When he could speak of it, much of what he said was much like what you have written here.

He is in my prayers, and now, so are you.

    • Thank you for that. My great grandfather died at the battle of Somme and my grandfather signed up right behind him to march into France. Wouldn’t ever tell me anything, but when we visited the memorial for WWII he openly wept.

My grandfather was made out of Oak. He slaughtered lamb for a living. Worked in a coal mine where his older brother died at 14. Nothing moved him. The only emotion I ever saw of him was mischievous banter with my grandmother, and complete stoicism rooted in that old Irish catholic tradition.

I cannot fathom what it would take to make a man like that weep. God Bless those souls, may we never see such times again.
